Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one component of Traditional Chinese Medicine which aims to balance energy in the body in order to keep it functional and healthy. For thousands of years the Chinese and other Eastern cultures have been using acupuncture and herbs to restore, promote and maintain good health. It holds the human body in great reverence, respecting and promoting its endless capacity for rejuvenation and recovery.

Acupuncture is an evidence-based treatment technique using disposable, stainless steel (hair-like) needles to help regulate the body’s nervous system. Acupuncture has been shown to decrease pain by promoting the release of naturally-produced chemicals called endorphins. Acupuncture also increases blood circulation by increasing blood flow and promoting Qi (energy within the body). The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities. Acupuncture is very effective in treating a variety of painful disorders, both acute and chronic.

Acupuncture is most effective at treating chronic pain, such as headaches, low back pain, migraines, muscle fatigue, and long-standing joint pain. It can also be used to treat frozen shoulder, arthritis, tennis elbow, sciatica and rotator cuff impingement syndrome. Most chronic pain conditions deal with specific muscle imbalances which include weakening and shortening of the myofascial structures holding our joints together. Medical acupuncture can be used to activate muscles that are too weak, loosen muscles that are too tight and restore conductivity in the nerves that supply them.

Our health professionals may recommend acupuncture treatment along with other therapeutic techniques such as manual therapy, Active Release Techniques® and/or progressive flexibility and strength conditioning.
