Active Release Techniques
Active Release Technique (ART®) is a patented, state of the art, soft tissue system or movement technique that treats injuries to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. ART® has been proven to be effective in the treatment of conditions that result from Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) and overused muscles. Overuse symptoms include headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow as well as other upper and lower extremity problems.
Over-Used Muscles Injuries May Occur Due to:
- Pulled, torn or strained soft tissue due to activity.
- Micro-trauma to the tissue and an accumulation of small tears.
- Reduced oxygen supply to injured soft tissue.
- Dense scar tissue formation in the affected area binding down the tissue.
- Shortening and weakening of affected soft tissue resulting in nerve entrapment.
- Reduced range of motion and loss of strength causing pain with movement.
Active Release Techniques is a hands-on approach which requires a refined sense of touch and experience. Every ART® session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The ART® provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.
At PhysioCare & Rehab, ART® is used to assess and treat movement dysfunction through the constant evaluation of tissue texture, tightness and movement of muscles, tendons, fascia, ligaments and nerves. These treatment protocols involve over 500 specific movements and allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART treatment is non-invasive and safe. Discomfort can be expected post treatment though symptoms are temporary.
